Follow our tips and you’ll be enjoying all the blooms and sights in no time.

First, gather all the necessary items. This will ensure that you are prepared and not wasting time searching for supplies like extra paper towels. We recommend having the following items on hand: a bucket, sponges, squeegee, soft cloth, newspapers or paper towels and a soft bristle brush. If you are going to do the exteriors you may want to have your hose hooked up and a ladder. By having these tools ready, you can streamline the process and achieve a sparking finish.

Always check with the manufacturer to see what cleaning detergent they recommend. Some products may be too harsh for a wood trim. We like this natural solution of 2 cups water, ¼ vinegar and ½ teaspoon of dish soap. After mixing, fill a spray bottle and get ready to clean!

Window washing is most effective when done in the early morning before the temperature rises. Excessive heat can cause the detergent to dry too quickly, resulting in streaks on the windows. Before beginning the cleaning process, it is important to conduct a thorough inspection of the windows, frames, and glass to identify any signs of wear, cracks, or screen damage. Take note of any areas that may require repairs or maintenance.

Let’s begin! Start by wiping down the window frame with a damp cloth. Open the window and clean out the sills. Your vacuum may come in handy to remove dirt or bugs. Working top to bottom, clean your glass panes with the solution we recommended. Using crumbled newspapers is a great way to achieve a non streak finish. Micro-fiber cloths are another absorbent option for drying. If you have larger window panes using a squeegee helps you remove water and dirt in one big swoop.

Your home’s doors benefit from a bit of freshening up as well. Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any build-up of grime. Loosen up dirt from your door’s screens with a soft bristle brush, then wipe down. Don’t use paper towels, as they can leave little bits behind. Brighten up your hardware too. Warm water and a mild soap are safe to use. Brass or other metals may benefit from a special cleaning solution to return their shine.

Doors and Windows had very humble beginnings. When Jim started the company in June of 1974, he bought a used 1957 F100 Ford Pickup for hauling steel cellar doors and cement bags. It was a used farm truck from Northampton with step sides and painted a cheerful green.

Since A.B.E. Doors and Windows is now a household name, you can imagine that business took off. With his early profits, Jim traded in that 1957 Ford for a brand-new truck within three months. Little did Jim know, he would come to fiercely regret that decision.

When Jim retired and nostalgia crept in, he started to look for that fateful “first truck.” Unfortunately, years went by before A.B.E.’s general manager, Marc, found a restored 1957 Ford on Facebook. The truck was even already green!

Jim brought the truck home from Long Island, New York. He added the lettering from A.B.E. Doors and Windows’s old logo. What was once a farm truck used for hauling cement bags is now a pampered antique car. Jim was able to recapture an elusive first and he doesn’t plan on letting it go anytime soon!

<picture></picture>

You’ll also discover they are easy to maintain, energy efficient and add curb appeal. Let’s look at the process so you know what to expect.

Replacement windows, as the name suggests, are designed to replace your current windows. They will be similar in size as the old windows and mounted to fit the existing opening. This will cause minimal disruption to the wall and trim around the window. Less mess is always good!

When you meet to discuss the look of your new window it would be helpful to arrive with a budget in mind. This will help guide which materials and options to choose so we stay within your cost allocation.

There are many ways to create a design that matches your home’s décor. You can choose materials the compliment the outside and the interior of your home. We love the contemporary colors that are offered today. There are options that allow you to add a grid (paned) look to your window or none for a more minimalist approach. Choosing hardware will be the cherry on top of a beautiful new window. Our glass options include patterned, privacy, hand stained art and etched looks. All of which may add some design elements to your home.

When installation day arrives you will be asked to clear the area surrounding the window and remove any window treatments or curtains. Protect any furniture with a covering or move it to another area. Keep children and pets away from the work area for their safety.

It may seem early, but now is the perfect time to schedule a visit from us. Prepping your garage makes the area safe and ensures your belongings are protected.

Start by giving it a quick cleaning. Sweep out any leaves or debris that could get in the way of your garage door’s sensors. Wipe up any spills that could freeze. Clean up any clutter that may be in the path to your car. Replace any burnt out light bulbs in, and outside of your garage.

Organize your winter items. Those shovels are no good if they are buried behind lawn chairs. Make sure your snow-blower is clean and that you have the proper oil and gas on hand. Take some time to get all your winter items to the front of the garage. Don’t forget any sports gear or clothing the family may need for a fun snow day.

Create a space for wet shoes and clothing. Keep the slush, salt, and dirt out of your living space. Create a “drop zone” for wet boots, coats, mittens, and other items.

Do a quick inspection of your garage door, opener, and hardware. Watch your door open and close. Does it wobble or seem like it’s lifting off the track? Can you see any loose parts? Are you hearing any squeaks, bangs, or pops? Test your door’s reverse feature. Does it stop if an object is placed in front of the sensors? If any of these examples are a concern, we recommend calling a professional to address them.

If you use your garage as a work area, you may want to check any weather- stripping, insulation and seals around windows and doors. You may want to consider adding some insulation to help retain the heat. Do you use a space heater? Use it with caution and unplug it when not in use.

Let’s wish for a mild winter but be prepared for a harsh one.

Perhaps you’ve been following our progress and have seen a few pictures of our new building on our Facebook page. We wanted to give you a sneak peek at what our new location will feature and the benefits it will provide our customers.

We’ve been at our current location since 1980 and although it has served us well, we were feeling a bit cramped. We wanted our new space to have a bright, open concept with designated areas to show products. Here are some of the new features we are excited about!

The larger showroom will allow us to display and feature our Provia and Raynor lines. You’ll see a literal “wall-0f-doors” to help visualize a potential front door’s look and features. We made some wall space to draw attention to our glass options as well. We want to emphasize the details in etching and the many patterns available.

Our installation feature will help you understand how our doors, siding and trim are installed. We want all our homeowners and businesses to understand the process and that every job is performed with care, precision, and pride.

Customers will enjoy a comfortable pergola-style meeting area to sit with our team members to discuss custom orders. An interactive program will help them build a door to their specifications and get a sense of how it will complement their home.

There will also be an area that features operating garage doors and openers.

The grand opening, which we anticipate being in the early part of 2024, will also coincide with our 50th year in business. We truly value and appreciate all our customers and local businesses that have supported us. You’ve made the journey from our humble beginnings in our founder’s garage to our newest building a treasured experience. We can’t wait to welcome you to this new space!

Learn to identify problem areas and keep your family safe.

Any home built before 1978 may have materials that contain lead. If you are considering a remodeling project, it would be wise to test several areas of the home to determine if lead is present. A professional company will get you the most accurate result, but test kits are available. If lead is present, consider hiring a service to remove the affected areas. If you proceed with remodeling, take precautions to keep dust at a minimum. Wear gear that covers your mouth, nose and eyes and employ an air purifier or vacuum with a HEPA filter.

Paint is the most common source of lead in an older home, but you may find it in your plumbing, as lead was used to line many materials prior to 1986. Your local township can test your home’s water and alert you to potential problems.

Lead is also sneaking into items like beads, cosmetics and spices from countries that have fewer regulations in manufacturing. Be cautious when purchasing items internationally. Always buy things from reputable businesses.

Children under the age of 3 are more susceptible to lead exposure since they are constantly putting their fingers in their mouths. Once lead enters into their digestive system, harmful levels can become present rather quickly. Lead poisoning symptoms can mask the common cold or flu. You may notice loss of appetite, fatigue, weight loss, constipation, or vomiting. If you feel your child has been exposed, see your doctor right away. When detected, most treatments can eliminate lead from the body quickly.

Find more information here:

https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/national-lead-poisoning-prevention-week.htm

Whether it’s the killer smashing their way inside to slice up some unsuspecting coeds or taking advantage so the poorly-dressed heroine can get a makeshift knife, broken glass is one of horror’s favorite props.

<picture></picture>

Glass is made up of three key components: soda ash, lime, and sand. These are melted at high temperatures, shaped, and formed. Then, this pre-glass material is heated again and allowed to cool in a process called ‘annealing.’ Annealing allows internal stresses out while adding strength. The differences between standard and tempered glass all come down to the length of time they are allowed to cool.

Standard glass is made to cool more quickly, allowing companies to produce more glass in a shorter amount of time. Standard glass can also be reworked. For example, it can be cut down to size, have its edges smoothed, and be drilled for holes without breaking. However, the glass is far more fragile and breaks into large shards—allowing killers and coeds to get those big horror movie chunks perfect for slashing.

Tempered aka ‘safety’ glass is allowed to cool more slowly. This makes it much stronger and also changes the way it breaks. Tempered glass shatters completely, leaving no shards in the existing frame and also into very small ‘pebbles’ that have a smaller chance of inflicting injury. The downside to tempered glass is that it cannot be reworked in any way—it cannot be cut or drilled after creation, leaving a cost margin for companies to think about.

As a general rule, everyone should be careful around glass products, but more things are made with tempered glass than you think. You probably know the obvious ones—windshields, shower doors, phone screens, and glass-topped tables. All sliding patio doors are also required to be made with tempered glass. Did you know that windows over a certain size, in bathrooms or near swimming pools, and low to the ground are all required to be made with tempered glass by law?

<picture></picture>

While lots of doors and windows are made with standard glass and therefore the perfect fodder for horror movies, there are plenty of places in your home that wouldn’t allow this spooky season’s masked psycho to slice-and-dice you.

Powder coating is a factory-applied polyester resin that provides a durable weather-resistant coating with a decorative finish. Let’s take a look at areas that commonly let in cold air (or let heat escape), so you can address them.

Check for drafts. Examine the seals around the outside and inside of doors, windows and vents. Inspect caulking and weatherstripping for wear or areas that may be peeling away. Replace if necessary. Electrical outlets, switch plates, baseboards and attic hatches are other places you may feel some cold air entering your home. Some of these areas can be fixed with caulk or a foam sealant. When dealing with electrical areas, you should consult a professional. A drafty window could benefit from curtains or you could use a draft stopper for the base of a door. You may want to use a film insulation kit as a draft blocker for windows. If you find you are making more and more repairs to fix drafts, it may be time to replace these problem areas.

How’s your insulation? Over time insulation can be effected by moisture, heat, pests and vibration due to high foot traffic. The average life span of insulation is 20 years, you may want to check your attic area and examine it. Replacing or adding insulation can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.

Check your furnace. Don’t wait till it’s 45 degrees out to discover your furnace is not working. Manufacturers recommend that you get your furnace serviced once a year. Schedule this maintenance now. You should also check any filters that may need to be cleaned or replaced. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, causing your furnace to work harder.

Prevent frozen pipes. Again, if you have insulation around some pipes in your home (attic, crawl spaces, garage), examine it to ensure it’s still in good shape. Set your thermostat at a consistent temperature. If you are going on vacation this winter, don’t turn your heat off or too low. If a really cold spell occurs, leave cabinets that contain pipes open, so warm air can circulate around them. Don’t forget to disconnect your garden hoses to prevent pipes bursting.

Your fireplace is great for adding another heat source and a cozy atmosphere. Schedule to have your chimney cleaned and the flue examined to ensure a tight seal when closed.

Our team is here to help with any window or door replacement. We want your home to be warm and safe over the winter months.

But when it comes to our homes, we need to recognize when things need to be replaced, like your windows. It wasn’t until the 1870s that a happy accident gave paperboard boxes a more widespread appeal. Instead, we have ‘On Hold’ Trivia.

The question: What is the United States’ first National Park?

The answer: Yellowstone National Park!

In 1871, Yellowstone was first brought to the attention of US Congress through early photographs, paintings, and sketches. Did you know that Yellowstone is home to more than five hundred active geysers? (That’s more than half the world’s geysers!) The Hayden Expedition made it their business to preserve Yellowstone from private development. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law and thus the first National Park was born.

However, it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for the young Yellowstone Park. Nathanial Langford acted as the first unpaid superintendent of the park but was unable to stop poachers, squatters, woodcutters, and vandals across the vast 2.2 million acres. Langford was forced out by political pressure in 1877. Philetus Norris was then appointed and the very next year, Congress approved funding to “protect, preserve, and improve” the park. Unfortunately, Norris and the superintendents that followed could do little to defend the park.

In 1886, the Army took charge of Yellowstone. Troops guarded the main attractions and ousted troublemakers while the calvary patrolled the interior. The largest issue the Army faced was the continued poaching of bison in the park. It wasn’t until 1894 that laws were passed to sufficiently criminalize poaching on the protected park grounds.

While the Army was able to successfully protect Yellowstone, the soldiers could not keep up with the thirst for knowledge that visitors brought with them. In 1916, the National Park Service began and established the groundwork that is still used to preserve our natural wonders today. All because some explorers in 1871 wanted to save something beautiful for future generations.

Your garage is a great place to store items, but when the temperatures rise, there are some things that should never be kept in the garage. Look at this list and make some adjustments if necessary. We want all your belongings safe and in good shape for the years to come.

Your spare refrigerator. We know it’s the ideal place to have one, but when temps start climbing, your fridge works overtime to keep it’s contents cold. That means more energy consumption and higher bills. Fridges work best when kept in a room that is around 65 to 78 degrees. If you have a spot in your basement or other room in the home, keep it there.

The extra propane tank. Not only could a leak seep into the garage exposing people to the risk of asphyxiation, but a small spark could ignite the tank. Limit the chance of a fire and keep your tank in an open area.

We all like to stock up on canned goods, paper towels and food items in bulk, but the garage is not the area to store them. That big bag of rice is prime pickings for mice and other critters to nibble on. Canned items run the risk of getting rust and spoiling because of the fluctuating temps. Paper (in any form-towels, tax documents, comic books) are another item that mice and insects love to feast on. It may be a good time to reorganize some kitchen cabinets and create some storage inside your home.

Antiques, pictures and heirloom furniture are all at risk when left in your garage. Moisture, changes in temperature and insects can all ruin these cherished mementos. Better to store them in the home, in tightly seals plastic bins.

Bonus tip: Elevate these items off the floor to avoid possible water damage.

Flammable items. Oily rags, gasoline or oil-based paints all run the risk of catching fire. Throw away dirty rags after any tune up or project. Move paints to a closet that sees cooler temps. While you can keep gas in the garage, make sure it is in an approved container and place it on a platform (away from sunlight) to help maintain temperature & limit condensation. Also check with your local community regarding their limit on how many gallons of gas can be stored.

Clothing, bedding or other materials. Besides the risk of bugs getting to these items, the heat and humidity can lead to mold and mildew. Plus, who wants to use a winter blanket that smells like car fumes.

Enjoy your summer!

Observe the door opening and closing on the tracks. Watch the door itself, does it wobble or seem to close hard? Check the sensors and make sure the door stops and reverses itself if the beam is interrupted. You can safely do this by crossing the beam with a broom handle at a distance. Test your emergency release feature as well. We recommend NOT making adjustments yourself, as many individuals suffer injuries from attempting to fix problems on their own.
