Doors and Windows had very humble beginnings. When Jim started the company in June of 1974, he bought a used 1957 F100 Ford Pickup for hauling steel cellar doors and cement bags. It was a used farm truck from Northampton with step sides and painted a cheerful green. </p><p>Since A.B.E. Doors and Windows is now a household name, you can imagine that business took off. With his early profits, Jim traded in that 1957 Ford for a brand-new truck within three months. Little did Jim know, he would come to fiercely regret that decision. </p><p>When Jim retired and nostalgia crept in, he started to look for that fateful “first truck.” Unfortunately, years went by before A.B.E.’s general manager, Marc, found a restored 1957 Ford on Facebook. The truck was even already green!</p><p>Jim brought the truck home from Long Island, New York. He added the lettering from A.B.E. Doors and Windows’s old logo. What was once a farm truck used for hauling cement bags is now a pampered antique car. Jim was able to recapture an elusive first and he doesn’t plan on letting it go anytime soon!</p><p> </p><figure class="image"><picture><source srcset="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/393.webp 393w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/777.webp 777w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/1161.webp 1161w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/1545.webp 1545w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/1929.webp 1929w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/2313.webp 2313w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/2697.webp 2697w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/3081.webp 3081w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/3465.webp 3465w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/3849.webp 3849w" type="image/webp" sizes="(max-width: 3849px) 100vw, 3849px"><img src="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/QEC6ASy2M-n3/images/3849.jpeg"></picture></figure>

I don’t know about everyone else, but I <i>love</i> horror movies and one of the staples of iconic horror is… broken glass. Whether it’s the killer smashing their way inside to slice up some unsuspecting coeds or taking advantage so the poorly-dressed heroine can get a makeshift knife, broken glass is one of horror’s favorite props.</p><p> </p><figure class="image"><picture><source srcset="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/114.webp 114w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/194.webp 194w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/274.webp 274w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/354.webp 354w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/434.webp 434w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/514.webp 514w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/594.webp 594w" type="image/webp" sizes="(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px"><img src="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/Ty6YH5dyHpFu/images/594.png"></picture></figure><p> </p><p>Glass is made up of three key components: soda ash, lime, and sand. These are melted at high temperatures, shaped, and formed. Then, this pre-glass material is heated again and allowed to cool in a process called ‘annealing.’ Annealing allows internal stresses out while adding strength. The differences between standard and tempered glass all come down to the length of time they are allowed to cool.</p><p>Standard glass is made to cool more quickly, allowing companies to produce more glass in a shorter amount of time. Standard glass can also be reworked. For example, it can be cut down to size, have its edges smoothed, and be drilled for holes without breaking. However, the glass is far more fragile and breaks into large shards—allowing killers and coeds to get those big horror movie chunks perfect for slashing. </p><p>Tempered aka ‘safety’ glass is allowed to cool more slowly. This makes it much stronger and also changes the way it breaks. Tempered glass shatters completely, leaving no shards in the existing frame and also into very small ‘pebbles’ that have a smaller chance of inflicting injury. The downside to tempered glass is that it cannot be reworked in any way—it cannot be cut or drilled after creation, leaving a cost margin for companies to think about. </p><p>As a general rule, everyone should be careful around glass products, but more things are made with tempered glass than you think. You probably know the obvious ones—windshields, shower doors, phone screens, and glass-topped tables. All sliding patio doors are also required to be made with tempered glass. Did you know that windows over a certain size, in bathrooms or near swimming pools, and low to the ground are all required to be made with tempered glass by law? </p><p> </p><figure class="image"><picture><source srcset="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/128.webp 128w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/256.webp 256w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/384.webp 384w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/512.webp 512w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/640.webp 640w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/768.webp 768w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/896.webp 896w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/1024.webp 1024w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/1152.webp 1152w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/1280.webp 1280w" type="image/webp" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px"><img src="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/TMlDjY2O8-UZ/images/1280.jpeg"></picture></figure><p> </p><p>While lots of doors and windows are made with standard glass and therefore the perfect fodder for horror movies, there are plenty of places in your home that wouldn’t allow this spooky season’s masked psycho to slice-and-dice you.</p><p> </p>

It wasn’t until the 1870s that a happy accident gave paperboard boxes a more widespread appeal. Gair realized that by cutting and creasing at the same time, he could create prefabricated paperboard boxes. </p><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:70.6%;"><picture><source srcset="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/234.webp 234w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/463.webp 463w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/692.webp 692w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/921.webp 921w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/1150.webp 1150w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/1379.webp 1379w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/1608.webp 1608w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/1837.webp 1837w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/2066.webp 2066w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/2295.webp 2295w" type="image/webp" sizes="(max-width: 2295px) 100vw, 2295px"><img src="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/i2775gk5ThbG/images/2295.jpeg"></picture></figure><p>Corrugated, or pleated, paper was patented in 1856 and originally used as a support for tall hats. It didn’t gain any headway as a shipping material until 1871. Albert Jones first used single-sided cardboard to wrap glass lantern chimneys and bottles prior to shipping. The first machine capable of producing large quantities of cardboard came to life in 1874. That same year, a second side was added to corrugated cardboard, giving it the familiar form we still use today. </p><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:67.88%;"><picture><source srcset="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/178.webp 178w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/349.webp 349w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/520.webp 520w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/691.webp 691w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/862.webp 862w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1033.webp 1033w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1204.webp 1204w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1375.webp 1375w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1546.webp 1546w,https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1717.webp 1717w" type="image/webp" sizes="(max-width: 1717px) 100vw, 1717px"><img src="https://ckbox.cloud/Ckw3mceAdLD1zoSsqLDx/assets/zNpERsb-IGsf/images/1717.jpeg"></picture></figure><p>The US manufactured its first cardboard box in 1895. Doors and Windows doesn’t have any ‘On Hold’ Music? Instead, we have ‘On Hold’ Trivia.</p><p>The question: What is the United States’ first National Park?</p><p>The answer: Yellowstone National Park!</p><p> </p><p>In 1871, Yellowstone was first brought to the attention of US Congress through early photographs, paintings, and sketches. Did you know that Yellowstone is home to more than five hundred active geysers? (That’s more than half the world’s geysers!) The Hayden Expedition made it their business to preserve Yellowstone from private development. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law and thus the first National Park was born. </p><p>However, it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for the young Yellowstone Park. Nathanial Langford acted as the first unpaid superintendent of the park but was unable to stop poachers, squatters, woodcutters, and vandals across the vast 2.2 million acres. Langford was forced out by political pressure in 1877. Philetus Norris was then appointed and the very next year, Congress approved funding to “protect, preserve, and improve” the park. Unfortunately, Norris and the superintendents that followed could do little to defend the park.</p><p>In 1886, the Army took charge of Yellowstone. Troops guarded the main attractions and ousted troublemakers while the calvary patrolled the interior. The largest issue the Army faced was the continued poaching of bison in the park. It wasn’t until 1894 that laws were passed to sufficiently criminalize poaching on the protected park grounds. </p><p>While the Army was able to successfully protect Yellowstone, the soldiers could not keep up with the thirst for knowledge that visitors brought with them. In 1916, the National Park Service began and established the groundwork that is still used to preserve our natural wonders today. All because some explorers in 1871 wanted to save something beautiful for future generations. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "> <img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_143413.jpg" width="1000" height="750" alt="" /></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Fun fact: A.B.E. Doors & Windows doesn’t subcontract any of our installations to anyone on the outside. Everyone who works here, works only here, including me!</span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> <img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_080849.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">After working at A.B.E. Doors & Windows for four years, I finally got to take a field trip out of the office and into the field. I was invited along with two of our technicians who were installing a brand-new Provia entrance door with two sidelights. Our day began at 7AM. We met at the warehouse where the guys loaded up the well-packaged entrance door into their truck and met with the salesperson who sold the door originally. I listened to them discussing the ins and outs of what to expect at the install today, going over pictures that the salesperson had taken and asking questions.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_080900.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">After that, we headed out from the warehouse with only a pit stop for coffee. Once we reached the jobsite, we all introduced ourselves to the homeowner. I volunteered what I was doing there and she accepted me right along with the guys. Jim and Nick started by scoping out the area that they would be installing in, asking to remove a large picture that was hung above the door so they wouldn’t risk it falling. They laid down a Floor Protector both inside and outside. </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_082455.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Before starting on anything else, Jim and Nick first unloaded the door unit, opened the big box, and measured the unit themselves. Everything comes with a printed label that indicates what should be in the box and what its specs should be, but it never hurts to double check. After all, we want to be certain that what we ordered is what’s in the box before any removal begins. After measuring the new door, Jim and Nick removed the interior trim and measured the old door. Then, they had the customer walk out to the curb with them and take a look at the new door, just to make sure they were happy with it.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_080607.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Once that was completed, the real fun began. Well, I say the <i>real fun</i>, but pulling out the old door was much less exciting than I personally expected. It was quite the sedate affair. First, they removed the door blank itself so that they only had the two sidelights in place. With the inside trim already removed for measuring, they positioned a saw in the gap around the frame and cut the screws and nails securing the old door. Then, it was a matter of wiggling the sidelight until it gave up and popped out, kind of like removing a loose tooth.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_083916.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">There’s something weirdly unsettling about a house with no front door. It was just a maw of studs. Jim and Nick started prepping for install whereupon I realized that putting in a new door isn’t so much about the<i> door</i> as it is about the <i>opening</i>. Jim and Nick spent a lot of time making the opening as square as they could. They trimmed back some drywall and shaved off some exterior plywood that had sunken down slightly from years of the house settling. They checked out the brick threshold and prepared some shims for the few uneven bricks so the door would sit level. Retrofitting something is very different from building a brand new house because things change and shift over the years. Our techs are pros at working with irregularities since that’s our specialty.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_092332.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Once they had the opening prepared to their satisfaction and had done their first round of cleaning-up, Jim and Nick took a break before psyching themselves up to carry the new door unit across the lawn. It was unfortunately drizzling on us most of the day so the grass was slippery. I never really appreciated what it would be like to spend the day outside of the nice warm office. However, the weather didn’t bother Jim and Nick. They took it slow and easy and set the new door into the opening from the outside. While Jim held it steady, Nick headed around the house and in through a backdoor to line it up from the inside. Once the door was <i>almost</i> in place, they ran a few long screws to hold it—kind of like how a seamstress would pin fabric before sewing.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_094737.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Then, they started adding shims around the sides and adjusting the “reveal” of the door. The reveal is the little gap that shows around your door when it’s closed. Think about how that looks. You want it to be the same distance on all sides so the door itself doesn’t scrape when opening and closing. They moved the door by what looked like millimeters to me, but Jim and Nick knew exactly what they were doing. Before long, that door looked like it had been <i>made</i> to fit on that home (which it had been since Provia custom-makes everything for us).</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_132242.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big> </big></span><big><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: larger;">With the door secured in its new home, Jim and Nick split up—one working inside and the other outside. Inside, Nick filled the minor gaps around the door with spray foam insulation. It expanded once sprayed, filling every nook and cranny. Then, he replaced the original trim and ran a new line of caulk around the edge. Outside, Jim sprayed a second hit of insulating foam. I’ve never seen a door look so snug. (That foam is very cool!)</span></big></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_101734.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><big><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: larger;">With that finished, the install became all about making the door look beautiful. Jim covered the exposed bit of “house” that had once been hidden behind wood trim with smooth new aluminum capping. The benefit to capping over trim is that it will never rot. Once the capping is in place, it has to be secured with trim nails that match its color. I was shocked by how much consideration our techs put into where they would place each nail and how they would cut each corner of capping for the least-noticeable seam. They applied as many nails as they felt was necessary to secure the trim while also being mindful that you would be able to see the nails. Then, they touched up the heads with white paint so they would blend in.</span></big></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_141148.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">The final step was caulking the top, sides, and bottom threshold. Again, I was surprised by the consideration that was put into choosing which color would go where. I thought it would be a no brainer—white all the way around the edge, right? Well, I would be wrong. Instead they chose a kind of opaque clear for the sides so that it would complement the pale brick and used white only for the top where the header was already white and therefore would blend in perfectly.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_142310.jpg" width="1000" height="750" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">After that, all we had left to do was clean up. Unfortunately, our vacuum decided it would not like to suck anything and the rain had made everything pretty wet, but the guys did their best to get everything in the endless drizzle. Rolling up the floor protector did a lot to contain the mess, but there was still some stray debris that we had to wipe up. Once we had cleaned up, Jim spent some time going over the door with the customer. He gave her a basic rundown of a few features, like the self-adjusting threshold and the hardware. Then, he handed over the keys and some touch up paint that came along with the door. We said our goodbyes to the homeowner and that was the end of our install.</span></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><img src="/uploads/image/2022%20Blog%20Pictures/20220222_143209.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></big></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;"> </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: larger;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Starting at 7AM and ending around 3PM, the total installation had taken about seven hours when accounting for our lunchbreak. It was a very long day in the wet and the cold, but Jim and Nick were good sports. They didn’t complain and they made the best of the weather. Having work done on your house can be nerve-wracking, but I can assure you that you’re in good hands with A.B.E. Doors & Windows.</span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Constantia, serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34);">In this day and age we have a world of goods at our fingertips via the internet. We can order a product that will be at our door in just a few days or look up information to solve practically any problem. While these solutions are handy, they lack personal service and attention to detail, which are still important. Let's not forget the ways small businesses can enhance your shopping experience.</span></p>
<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt"><b>The difference of knowledge.</b></font></font></p>
<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt">Have you ever done a bit of research to replace a part, ordered it, only to have it not fit? Now you’re on the phone, chatting with someone miles away and getting little resolved. Small business owners spend hours making sure they know their inventory inside and out. You can rest assure if a replacement part does not fit or work properly, they will get to the bottom of it. Earning your trust is essential to the heart of their business.</font></font></p>
<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt"><b>The difference of training.</b></font></font></p>
<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt">Even the best do-it-yourselfers need a hand from time to time. Sometimes the mechanics of a large appliance or project is overwhelming. Attention to training employees about the products being used and how they work is important. Many big box stores have a quick turn over in employees. That means the service person, who may have just watched a video or read a manual, is now installing an item in your home fairly unprepared. The owner of a smaller business can take the time to ensure his employees are well versed in any installation and the parts being used. Sometimes they are able to be trained by the manufacturer themselves, which allows them to ask more detailed questions.</font></font></p>

<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt"><b>The difference of seeing in person.</b></font></font></p>
<p class="western"><font face="Constantia, serif"><font style="font-size: 12pt">I think we’ve all ordered something, that when it arrived, was not how it was described. Too tight, too large, way too hot pink! There is something to be said about seeing an item in person. To be able to touch it, feel the weight of it and just get a sense if it really fits you or your home. A local business knows their community and the looks and styles that people want. It is also nice to know they have staff on hand to assist you in making the right decision, no going around aisle to aisle looking for someone to wait on you. </font></font></p>

<p style="text-align: center;">The past few weeks have allowed us to really focus on some areas of our homes that we may not always get to. Many of us have been spring cleaning and getting our homes ready for warmer weather. While you've probably hit all the familiar areas, let's walk you through some spots you may have missed.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">In the Kitchen</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Your counters are probably wiped clean at the end of the day, but when was the last time you gave some attention to your back-splashes? No doubt they see their fair share of food, splashed beverages and dish water. Wipe them down with warm water with a few drops of soap.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">The trash can see all kinds of goodies thrown in it through-out the week, and even the best liner can't stop a tear here and there. All of a sudden, that old spaghetti sauce you thought was contained is inside the can. About once a month, take a peek in there before you replace the liner. Wipe it down inside and out.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Let's take a good look at your small kitchen appliances. When was the last time you emptied the toaster of crumbs or wiped down the can opener? Keep your coffee machine running well by setting aside a morning to run a few cycles of a vinegar solution. Mix a half a cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water and run it through your normal coffee cycle. After that is done, let coffee maker cool a little and run a cycle of plain water...repeat that process at least two more times.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">In the Bathroom</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Tub....check, toilet.....check, sink...check.....you've hit all the major spots. Now lets look up to that exhaust fan, chances are you are going to see some built up dust. Grab your vacuum and use your hose to gently suck that dust away.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Combat hardened lime on shower heads and faucets with the vinegar solution again. Place your shower head in a small bowl and let it sit in that solution for a few hours. Use an old toothbrush to help remove the build-up from the small openings. Take some cotton balls soaked in the vinegar solution and place or mold them around any areas of your faucet that may see some build-up. After a few hours remove and wipe down with a rag.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Make-up sponges & brushes often get overlooked too. Let them soak in a warm soapy bath for about 15 minutes. Rinse well and let them stand up-right to dry. Not only will they wear better, but you are also keeping oils and harmful bacteria from entering your pores.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Other Rooms of the Home</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Besides your exhaust fan in the bathroom, check out all your vents, air ducts and especially your dryer vent. Clear them all of dust or any thing that may inhibit air flow. Make sure you look at the dryer vent where it exits the home outside. It's amazing how much dust can accumulate there as well.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Look up again to ceiling fans and lighting. A wet microfiber cloth is great for catching all the little dust particles. Shades and blinds will also benefit from a gentle wipe or light vacuuming with the brush attachment. Light bulbs can collect dirt too.....wipe them very gently, when the light is turned off.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Your remote and gaming controls see a lot of action every day. A wipe that contains some disinfectant or mild bleach cleanser is safe for the devices and you.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Vacuuming your mattress every three months is important to keep it free from mites, dander and dust. It also helps to prolong the life of your mattress and the bedding.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in">Now your house is really sparkling! Enjoy these early days of spring.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This coming April will mark the 50</span>th<span style="font-size: medium;"> anniversary of Earth Day. Originally started to bring awareness to air and water pollution, the event is now recognized in over 190 countries. The environmental issues may have changed over the years, but the focus of helping our planet remains the same. Let's take a look at some of the ways that are making a big impact now.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4">Sustainable Goods</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">These are items that are usually made from raw materials (think bamboo, hemp & organic cotton) that serve a function now, but will also be easily broken down or recycled in the future. </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">Recent examples would be people using metal straws instead of plastic or choosing reusable sandwich bags in lieu of the fold-over baggies. </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4"><font size="3">Around your home you could ditch the paper towels & use cotton cloths to clean up spills or to do your spring cleaning with. A toss in the washer and they are good to go again and again. </font> </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">Invest in a great water bottle and pitcher/filter system. Choosing to stop buying bottled water makes a huge impact in terms of plastic that fills up our landfills. Let the whole family choose a fun water bottle and encourage refilling from the pitcher! </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4"><font size="3">Have you noticed that plastic bags from the stores are getting thinner and thinner? Help the environment AND avoid your groceries falling out by using canvas bags. Keep a stash in your car for shopping trips.</font> </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4">Borrow Instead of Buying</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">It may be tempting to purchase that new.... power-tool, book, movie, baby gear, sports equipment....you get the idea. Why not consider borrowing the item if you can? There are so many items that we only use a few times, borrowing...or even trying to find the item second hand, keeps things out of landfills and can save you some money to boot! </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4">Rethink Your Next Remodeling Materials</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">Using materials like bamboo, cork & hemp when remodeling areas of the home are a big construction trend. Consumers like the fact that these materials are sustainable, affordable and improve a home's resale value. They are also durable and look beautiful. Another trend is seeking out replacement materials, or refreshing older items instead of buying new. The environment gets a big boost from lowering emissions on the manufacturing & transportation of newer goods and natural resources are saved as well.</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="4">Compost Bins Are In!</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">Give your garden a healthy boost by adding your composted banana peels, egg shells and coffee grounds. Small bins for the kitchen are less than $20 or you could try your hand at making one. You-Tube has loads of easy instructional videos that will have you ready to compost in a jiffy. Reduced waste and better tasting tomatoes are a winning combo. </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3"><font size="4">Reduce, reuse and recycle is still a great motto. </font> </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font size="3">Keep looking for small ways to make changes in and around your home. Every gesture is beneficial for ourselves and our planet!</font></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><i>Home maintenance can be a tricky thing. You can go for years with no issues, and then one day look around and notice not one, but all of your windows are drafty and in sad shape. </i></font><font face="Arial, sans-serif">If you don't have cash set aside to make the necessary improvements to your home's windows, (or door replacement) there are financing options to help you cover this cost. Let's take a look at some common choices.</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">Using an Existing Credit Card</font></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif">A great option to consider if the dollar amount is on the lower side. This also avoids you having to open up another loan, which means no waiting for an approval. If you have a credit card that rewards you with cash back that is a nice perk, just make sure you can pay it off in a timely manner so you don't negate that benefit. You may also want to check your current interest rate. If it on the higher side, another loan-type may be a better option.</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">Partnering with the Window Dealer or Company</font></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif">Many dealers have their own finance companies that they partner with. </font><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">These</span></font><font face="Arial, sans-serif"> loans usually mean a quick approval, which equals convenience for you. Some loans may offer a waved interest period...for example...no interest if you pay back the loan in one year. Just make sure to read the fine print. You may be able to make payments past that initial promotion period, but you will probably be subject to paying all the interest that accumulated during that year. These loans may also come with a higher interest rate.</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">Home Equity Loan or Mortgage Refinance</font></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">These two options allow you to use your home as collateral </span></font><font face="Arial, sans-serif">and may offer a tax deduction of the interest you pay each year. Both will probably give you the best interest rates, which is ideal if you are borrowing a larger sum of money. Of all the loan options these may take the longest in terms of approval process. These also place a lien on your home and add length to your overall mortgage if you choose to refinance.</font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">Personal Loan</font></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif">A smart option for those improvements that may fall between the two to four thousand dollar range. If you have a healthy credit report &</font><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"> rating, your </span></font><font face="Arial, sans-serif">interest rate should be fairly reasonable. You may also have some options in terms of the </font><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">loan’s</span></font><font face="Arial, sans-serif"> length, which translates into a payment that fits your budget. Cons may include a higher rate of interest if your credit score is on the lower side and an approval process that may take a few days/weeks. </font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">FHA Loans</font></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif">The government also provides assistance to qualifying families that are making energy efficient upgrades to their homes. Please visit their website for more information on these programs.</font><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"> </span><a href="https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/housing/sfh/eem/energy-r" target="_top"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><i><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/housing/sfh/eem/energy-r</span></i></font></a><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><i><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"> </span></i></font></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in"><font face="Arial, sans-serif"><font size="4">Now that you know your finance options, all you need to do is start choosing the perfect door or windows for your home. With so many great options...you may find this decision is harder to decide!</font></font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><img src="/uploads/image/11-1,%20Totem%20Pole.jpg" width="1000" height="1333" alt="" /></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: smaller;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">A trend is starting to take shape in our office. Most of these begin with our general manager, Marc, and I having a conversation whereupon one of us will say something the other one questions. Then, I do research and wind up blogging about it. Most recently, I was talking about our newest recruit being “the Low Man on the Totem Pole.” Marc was confused as he thought that the lower figures on the totem pole were the more important ones. That makes sense, but that wasn’t how I understood the saying. Thus, I began to search for the truth. </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: smaller;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">The meaning of ‘totem’ is derived from the Algonquian word ‘odoodem’ which means ‘kinship group.’ The Native American totems that we all picture are typically carved from a single tree trunk, commonly a red or yellow cedar which is the most resistant to rot. The totem pole can have many meanings from welcoming travelers into a village, to commemorating deceased ancestors, to telling a legend, to ridiculing someone, to recounting notable events. Given the complexity and symbolic meaning of the carvings, their placement and importance relies on the observer’s knowledge of the culture the totem reflects.</span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: smaller;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">According to Canadian naturalist, Pat Kramer—an expert on First Nations culture—the lowest figures on the totem pole are often considered the most prestigious. The designs on the bottom are the ones that will be seen at eyelevel, after all, so they are usually carved by the master while the apprentices work on the higher portions. The higher up the figure is on a totem pole, the more representational they are. </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: smaller;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">In short, the expression “Low Man on the Totem Pole” was actually popularized by radio comedian, Fred Allen, in reference to his friend, journalist H Allen Smith. Fred used the phrase in the introduction of Smith’s 1941 book of self-deprecating essays about his humorous adventures. <u>The Low Man on the Totem Pole</u> went on to become a mega-bestseller in the World War II era, especially among U.S. soldiers who were at the bottom of their respective chains of command. </span></big></span></span><span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: smaller;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><big><span style="line-height: 107%;">Now that you know the real origins of the expression, Low Man on the Totem Pole, you can take it one of two ways—either you’re quite important or you’re very much not. Considering that both the military and the totem pole wouldn’t be what they are without all the vital base parts of them, I think we should just appreciate each other for what we are.</span></big></span></span></p>
