Garage Door Safety

Your garage door is by far the largest, heaviest object that moves in your home. That’s why it’s so important you maintain it properly and ensure it’s safety with these tips and precautions.

Talk to your children (and their friends) about not playing with the door or the remote control. There are over 40,000 injuries to kids every year caused by the garage door. Keep yours safe by explaining they should never hang on to door when it is moving and always stay a safe distance away when the door is in operation. Keep remotes away from curious little hands and mount the opener button high enough that small children can not reach it.

Perform a visual inspection once or twice a year. Observe the door opening and closing on the tracks. Watch the door itself, does it wobble or seem to close hard? Check the sensors and make sure the door stops and reverses itself if the beam is interrupted. You can safely do this by crossing the beam with a broom handle at a distance. Test your emergency release feature as well. We recommend NOT making adjustments yourself, as many individuals suffer injuries from attempting to fix problems on their own.

Never leave your door partially open, as it is a safety risk if someone should try and crawl under it. In that state it also poses a security risk, you don’t want anything uninvited (persons or critters) into your home.

If you have to open the garage door manually, never push or slide your fingers in-between sections, always use the handle to get a good grip.

Never start your car with the garage door closed. Exhaust fumes build up quickly, you could be putting yourself at risk. If you have a second story above the garage you could be putting any occupants there at risk as well.

Keep your garage and it’s contents safe if you are traveling. Don’t leave any extra remotes in cars that may be parked in the driveway or street. Download an app that lets you open the door to receive packages while you are away. These apps can also send you alerts if the door is opened.

Looks like the warmer weather is finally here. People are getting their homes ready for another summer, planning vacations and gearing up for fun with family and friends. Since you may see more traffic at your home and on the street, please make sure your garage door and surrounding areas are safe and secure.

Over time, your sensors can get bumped or blocked and the sensors won’t align. First, wipe off the sensors gently with a wet cloth, then make sure there is nothing obstructing them. Test the sensors safely by closing the garage door and use a broom handle to break the beam. If the garage door goes up-all is well. If not, you may have to realign your sensors. If yours does not have this, you may have to make small tweaks until testing sees your door reverse itself.
Lights...Camera...Action! Although we associate this phrase within the movie industry, it can be helpful when thinking of ways to keep your home safe. Consider these tips to protect yourself and your belongings.

Lights!

One of the biggest deterrents to burglars is a well-lit home. Make sure walkways, entrances and the outside of your garage are illuminated well. Anyone targeting your home wants to stay incognito, placing motion sensitive light bulbs near the garage and doors prevents a person lurking around.

Same goes for inside the home. Lights set on timers are a great way to dissuade thieves by giving the illusion that someone is there. If you are traveling, have someone check in on your home and instruct them to open blinds or curtains in the morning and close them in the evening.

Smart light bulbs and switches are making their ways into many homes. Pairing these items with an app allows you to control lighting from wherever you are. There are many different bulb options and media platforms to choose from. Make sure you do some research to see what is right for your home.

Camera!

More popular than ever, security systems that allow you to view who is knocking on your door are a hit with homeowners. These cameras can really range in price, so it’s important to do a little research to determine the right type for your needs. Battery powered devices are economical, but will you remember to change or recharge them when necessary? Systems that are wired in may be worth the investment, but also consider what happens if the power or Wi-Fi goes out and you are unable to connect for a while.

Durability and the overall quality of vision (especially night vision) are important factors as well.

Camera doorbells are another way to alert you to deliveries, guests or anyone inquiring at your door. Once pressed, an alert is sent to a paired smart device so you can see and talk with the person outside. Most systems can be hardwired to your existing doorbell, but some are available with batteries. Unlike the security system, these cameras are usually triggered by motion sensors or by depressing the doorbell.

An unkempt yard can signal to burglars you are away. Be sure to mow and trim bushes just before you leave or have a neighbor attend to your lawn. Make plans for someone to collect your mail and newspapers or arrange for them to be held until you return. Don’t announce vacation plans on social media.

2020-09-18T00:00:00-04:00Garage Door Safety,Garage Door Safety,Garage Door Safety,Windows,Garage Door SafetyGarage Door Safety Month

This month we recognize the importance of garage door safety. Every year over 20,000 people suffer injuries from garage door accidents. We want to lessen that number by mentioning the most common accidents and how to avoid them.

Playing with the doors. Children sometimes view garage doors as a cool “ride”. They cling to the door as it travels up & down the tracks or race to see if they can duck under the door before it closes. Prevent this by explaining the dangers & enforcing it is not a toy. You may also want to include that the button to open or close the door is off limits as well and only to be used by an adult.

Beat the Clock. You would be amazed by how many injuries (over 150) people & a good chance their vehicles suffer from trying to get into the garage before the door closes. Although many garages have sensors that prevent a door closing if it senses something in the way, these sensors can get dirty or misaligned preventing them from doing their job. If the door starts closing, always make the time to hit the remote button again and wait till the door is fully open. It's worth the few seconds to ensure you and your vehicle go unscathed.

Don't get Pinched or Crushed. A garage door in motion generally stays in motion. Watch where you place your hands, fingers, feet...etc. Another area to remind kids to be mindful of, those tracks and rollers are strong! Although rare, sections of the garage door can become loose or undone leading to falls. Regular maintenance is your best defense of something like that happening.

Glass and Sharp Edges. One of the biggest areas of injuries...over 1000 a year. A broken window left unattended or a few shards of glass not swept up can cause problems for tires, feet and paws if you have pets. Always clean up broken glass right away, wear gloves and vacuum the area to gather up any small shards. A bump to sharp areas of the door or surrounding tracks & hinges can leave you with a nasty scrape or deep cut. We don't recommend taping or gluing anything bumper-like to these areas because it could interfere with the door opening and closing. Instead you could apply a small line of bright paint to alert you to these sharp areas.

Do It Yourselfers. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Attempts to make repairs to the garage door or opener system account for 1600 accidents a year. Best to leave repairs, especially the springs, to the experts.

Now that you know what to look out for, take some time to today to inspect your door and the surrounding areas. Let's all have a safe summer!

Now, I’m not the biggest baseball fan, but there’s one old adage that always comes around from the people in my life who do—‘Play the ball before it plays you.’ Apparently, it stems from the way you’re supposed to play a ground ball. Once the ball is in play, it does all sort of unexpected things once it hits the ground. It might keep rolling, it might change directions, or it might slow down in the grass. What it won’t do it is roll right into an outfielder’s glove, therefore ‘play the ball before it plays you.’ It’s pretty catchy and is actually pretty helpful in day to day life. <span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif">

Take for instance, the things in your life that you use regularly that tend to break from regular use i.e. your shoes, your car, and your garage door. Are your shoes worn out? What do you do—buy new ones? Check engine light on in your car? Take it to a mechanic. The garage door is maintained with a system of pulleys, cables, and springs. Visual inspection can be helpful for the pulleys and cables, but the spring unfortunately breaks from the inside-out. There’s no way to tell that it’s going until it’s gone. However, you could be proactive, not reactive. <span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif">

Doors and Windows we offer a Twenty Point Service Inspection for a reasonable price. During the inspection our technician will look over the door and make recommendations regarding the service. They will check the mounting pads, adjust the tracks, perform a balance check, and adjust the up and down sensitivity limits as needed. They will tighten all the hardware and components of the door; check for cracks, wearing, and fraying on the components; lubricate all moving parts and test the automatic opener safety features.<span style="font-size:9.0pt;line-height:107%;font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif">

Look eye-level. Check out any windows in your garage. Are any broken or cracked? Schedule for those windows to be replaced to avoid someone cutting themselves. Look over the mechanics of your door opener. Are the tracks clear of debris? Does anything look broken or worn out? Open and shut the garage door and watch the track, brackets, springs and hinges in action. Take note if you feel something is not working properly. Many injuries occur when a person attempts to fix opener parts themselves, we recommend calling a professional to repair any areas you feel need attention.

Look down. Glance at the state of your floor. Is there an oil spill or any other liquids that need to be cleaned up? If you store any items around the perimeter, are they held in place tightly? If not, look into installing pegboard or some other system to keep things in place.

Look over the sensors that make sure your garage door stops coming down if the beam is broken. Clear away any leaves or garbage that may have gotten in the beams path over time. Have an adult help you test it by crossing the beam. If the door continues to move they may need realignment or replacement.

Encourage your children not to leave toys or bikes in the path of the garage door. It seems obvious, but children should never hang from the opening or closing door for fun. Kids should also take precaution when playing in the driveway......so many tragic situations happen from cars pulling into and leaving the home.

Install a timer that turns on lighting near your garage at dusk. Criminals are less likely to target a home where they think someone is in the residence.

Don't leave garage door openers in any cars left at home. You can also unplug the garage door opener. We recommend NOT using a lock or zip-ties to prevent the door from opening. Too often, people return from vacation and forget they have a lock on the door and end up damaging the door upon their return.

The myQ app is a resourceful way to stay connected to your home while you are away. When paired with a smart garage door opener unit, you can see if the door has been opened or closed. You can also open it from your phone to allow a delivery or let a neighbor in. A wonderful way to have peace of mind until your return.
